Holroyd Rangers Bow Out of Sapphire Cup

Holroyd Rangers Women’s Premier League represented GDSFA in the inaugural Sapphire Cup on Wednesday Night, in what was a difficult first match against quality opposition on the Central Coast.

The Rangers lost the match 2-0, although despite an early exit, the girls are better for it having experienced a true cup competition for the first time, equal to that of the Men’s State Cup.

Holroyd Head Coach Danny Rizk said it was a great experience for the girls and one that has been a long time coming.

“The girls are happy that there is now a cup that they can participate in and this is extremely important for the Women’s game. This now offers the ladies something similar to the men, and gives our younger girls something to aspire towards.”

The Rangers boarded the team bus just before 4pm today and headed North for a 7pm kick-off up the coast.

Terrigal United were more comfortable on home turf, and settled in with a goal on the 14th minute from a free-kick.

They doubled their lead just before half time.

But Holroyd would find their rhythm in the second half, and managed to piece together some impressive football, with several chances in front of goal.

Rizk said ‘We took a bit of time to settle into the game, and by the time we did we had conceded two goals.

After half time, we lifted our intensity and the game was much more evenly matched. We had the opportunities but couldn’t convert them.”
